Hello there, Adele.

Adele-Vinyl-cover

Adele has just recently released her single ‘Hello’, taken from her new album, 25, (release date: 20 November).
The song is great. Like really. Which is why I decided to pull out my (rather dusty) inks and brushes and while listening to this goosebumping song far too many times, I did an Adele-portrait-meets-lyrics piece.
I ended up simplifying the original artwork in Photoshop because there was just too much text… this should explain why not all the lyrics made it on in the end. But that’s just the fine print. Who reads fine print anyway? (I’m joking)

1I started the painting as an A3 landscape (I’m not sure why that made sense at the time) which was just a bit too big to fit in my scanner at the end. So the only way to really digitise it (other than photographing, but that’s not accurate enough) was to scan in the image half a side at a time, left then right with enough overlap each time. And yay Photoshop (and Google for showing me the answer) and its highly impressive automatic stitching command: Photomerge (File > Automate > Photomerge).

Stitched-Trio
1. I was originally going to manually try match up and layer the two scans myself – this would’ve taken a lot more time, effort and inaccuracy.
2. This shows the stitching that PS did by itself. Pretty incredible. I pulled the two pieces apart just to show how it merged the two separate images so perfectly together. I initially thought it was already flattened because it looked so natural.
3. How it looked immediately after it finished rendering the Photomerge. SEAMLESS!!

Reminiscent of Billy Joel’s Piano Man actually…

Oh, love me do!

Shirt-guyLove-me-do-bg2

Found this little floppy-tongued greyhound on my Facebook TL (below) and thought he needed an ode-to-puppy watercolour portrait done. It really was just going to be a little painting… but it turned into an Instagram post, then a scan and digital painting/edit which needed to be mocked up on some swag-a-lag chap from Tumblr (above) and then put into this here blog post. I guess this was a productive procrastination session when I have other work that needs to be done. Oh well.
At the end of this post is a bit of listening pleasure from the Beatles by whom the pup’s tagline is inspired. So please, love me do. Whoa, love me do.

#CONUNDRUMS

Day-8

This post was inspired (again) by Austin Kleon, and what he’s coined “Newspaper Blackout Poems“, a coincidental and unique story-telling method made with a black koki and some sentence structure. Really great and interesting idea to play around with. I cut up and blacked out a Glamour page and made an appropriate poem about conundrums. #23dom for you…

Day 9. Saturday. 31/01/15
#RHODENTTOES

Day-9

Painted my toenails in some purple polish I still have from my amazing varsity days at Rhodes (insert purple nostalgia here….) and then painted with the polish onto the paper.

Day-10

Well… hey, Boo.

Day-11

Lunch was so great today it needed its own special mention. I don’t often eat out during lunch breaks, but when I do it’s usually the highlight of the 8-5er.

Day 12. Tuesday. 03/02/15

#POPCORNY

Day-12I have such a great food relationship with popcorn that I can have it almost every night for supper. So, please don’t you dare tell me it’s not a proper meal… :p

Day-14

Okay, a little drastic and a little dark. But ja, day 14 was pretty strongly felt…

Day 15. Friday. 06/02/15
#CURRENTDILEMMA

Day-15

Been partying (read: moving our asses from the office into our usual spot in the pub) too often during the week that by the time Friday comes I’m 1) tired and 2) broke and end up going grocery shopping on a Friday instead of spending another night out.

Original typographic work. Pencil, 210 x 297 mm.

For and about all those times we’re made to think our great isn’t good enough.

This piece has a kind of end-of-year-vibe with nothing to do with Christmas, but more a summative look back at the general feeling for the year gone by. A tad negative though, but I see it more as having just been a year spent trying to find my footing in the [creative and real] world and the big city. 2014 has been the foundation-digging year and from here on out, it’s only onward and upward. Here’s to greatness. *glass clink

This work is from an ongoing series of type-work based on experiences, thoughts and quotes particularly significant to me at this point in time. The ongoing struggle of a 22 year old. Negativity and the plight to greatness.
