The Korean Dog Starter Guide

Do you want your dog to fit in with the hip-hop-colour-pop pups?
Here’s what you need to get going…Korean-Dog-Starter-Guide

A post inspired by the many super-pop groomed pet dogs I pass on the streets daily here in Korea. They are often carried by hand, in a handbag or occasionally pushed around in their own prams.

A post inspired by these many similar-looking elderly women I pass on the streets daily or have elbow-jabbing me in my ribs to get on the subway here in Korea.

PROCESS

The initial drawing and line work was done using a Parker fountain pen (see video).
My favourite property of this pen’s ink is its reaction to water.
With an aqua brush, I used the water to let the lines bleed slightly and paint in some tone and details.Flowered-weeds_detail2
Moving to digital, I scanned in the page from my Moleskine journal (providing the background yellowish colour), then cropped and coloured the image using a complimentary red, set to multiply and drawn in with a wacom tablet and pen.Flowered-weeds_detail1
Finally, resizing the artwork for download as desktop and phone wallpapers.

WIN a Scribble Doodle book!

Doodled Amy Slatem (c) 2016

It’s small, it fits into your handbag or back pocket, just needs a pen or pencil and some imagination.

Scribble Doodles is the procrastinator’s perfect pocket book. Filled with 40 pages of creativity-starters and doodle platforms, this little book will keep you busy and offer the perfect distraction when you probably should be doing or paying attention to something else…

Each “activity” is based on a scribble which you draw onto, into, over, under, tippex on, paint, scratch out, write on or just colour in to create new creatures, constructions or mindless pen-wonderings.
At the start of April I’ll be giving away 2 copies of this little gem, one to a chosen Facebook fan, and one to an Instagram fan.

Girl with Hat

Final artwork. Mixed media illustration.

I started this piece off doing a pencil portrait one evening sitting in front of the TV before deciding to take it a step further and use my Wacom and some good ol’ Photoshop to try bring it to life. I played around with a bunch of PS brushes which I’ve been collecting (some great, some a waste of space) but I particularly like the watercolour and the tree brush sets. I found an image with an attractive colour palette to base my colour picking off. A good few hours later, a spontaneous dash of typography and ta-dah… Sunday illustration done.

1st date with my Wacom

Blue Portraai - Amy SlatemI’ve had my Wacom (Intuos Pro Medium) for about 2 months now but it’d taken till last night only for me to finally sit down and start working on a digital painting. I’ve been using the Wacom at work when I can, mostly just for logos and deep-etching, and very occasionally some illustrative work. It’s like a Ferrari having to drive at 60…
So last night’s practice was much needed for me to start figuring out just some of the powers of the tablet-Photoshop partnership.Blue-Portrait-animation_Amy Slatem

I started with the portrait by finding an image I liked, added some layers, base colours, cool brushes, more layers, help from a knowledgeable friend, colour accents, details, more layers, and this is as far as I got for now… Consider this a work in progress/ abandoned art.

23dom: Week 1. 23/01/15 – 30/01/15

Day 1. Friday. 23/01/15
#BIRTHDAY

Day-1“It’s ma birfday, it’s ma birfday, Ima spend ma money.” – as according to Will.i.am.  And there I sat on my bed in the morning before work on a Friday, opening my presents brought back from home over the holiday, waiting patiently for this day. I’m 23. No more Taylor Swifting now, but then again: “We’re happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time. It’s miserable and magical.” Oh yeah!

Day 2. Saturday. 24/01/15
#SHATTERED

Day-2Shattered was my passenger window. Shattered were my emotions, my security. Shattered as I drove home from the best day spent with my best mates in the Joburg Botanical Gardens for my birthday picnicing. Shattered went my window as I came to a robot and a man broke my window, got half into my car, and tried to take my bag. Hello crime. Bad timing.

Day 3. Sunday. 25/01/15
#REPORT

Day-3With crime comes admin and police stations. Today I learnt how to file a police report. And got hit on by a police officer. Could SOMEONE in an authoritative role in this country please just do right.

Day 4. Monday. 26/01/15
#BLACKOUT

Day-4Eskom is going through a very selfish stage and doesn’t want to share its power. For that, we’re experiencing total blackouts for a few hours at a time, which is actually only bad when you’re at home, at night, alone, in the dark, after a traumatic experience (see day 2). Buuuuut… when it happens during the day at work, well then it’s not my loss…

Day 5. Tuesday. 27/01/15
#BEERBROS

Day-5Our lunch break was only granted late afternoon when the power was expected to go out. Starving, us cool people hit up our local lunch spot (which is also conveniently unaffected by power outages). Chillin’ with da boys, dranking beer – the only way to do it.

Day 6. Wednesday. 28/01/15
#SUNNY

Day-6Sometimes it’s necessary to take a moment to remember that the smiling, fabulous models in magazines are paid to look so. They’re working a job. It can’t all be peachy. They leave that wardrobe in the office. I also just felt like tearing up some magazine pages.

Day 7. Thursday. 29/01/15
#LOVE&ATTRACTION

Day-7

Well because Austin Kleon is the bomb dig, and the writer of the book I’m busy reading about how to show you creative work to the world. This guy. His brain is great. And so inspiring.
